This massive film is based on internationally acclaimed Kalidasa’s Sanskrit play ‘Abhijnana Shakuntalam’
Shaakuntalam is all set to release in different languages includes Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam & Kannada.
This film story revolves around the epic love story of Shakuntala and King Dushyant from Mahabharata, portrayed by Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Dev Mohan.

Sources states that after the announcement of this movie, the makers have approached actress Anushka Shetty for the lead role of Shakuntala in this movie.
Also this film director’s previous historical drama “Rudhramadevi” is notably the “Anushka”‘s starrer which was released in the year 2015.

Due to some issues Anushka shetty’s unavailability made the way for Samantha. And later in December 2020, Samantha Ruth Prabhu was confirmed to be cast as the lead actress to portray as Shakuntala in this periodical film.
